Change Walmart Change America - Why You Need to Support Walmart Workers Strike

Why are Walmart workers standing up all across the country?

As the world’s largest private employer, Walmart impacts all of our lives. Communities, workers, organizations and elected officials are coming together to demand that Walmart improve living conditions and guarantee the rights of workers, care for the environment, rebuild our communities and elevate global living standards.

Walmart store workers are asking people nationwide to support them on Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year. They ask that supporters take action that spreads the word about their strikes and demonstrates to Walmart a wave of support for workers who are speaking out about poor working conditions, low wages, irregular hours and more.

While the store workers are not union members, they have joined together in OUR Walmart, a worker-led organization that stands up to make change in its company. Find out more at http://forrespect.org and http://MakingChangeAtWalmart.org.

Here are some ways you can help show support from Making Change at Walmart:
  1. Take the Black Friday Pledge to say that you will stand with workers on the busiest shopping day of the year. On the Corporate Action Network website, we are gathering locations for actions and events supporting Walmart strikers, as well as materials. Enter your city or ZIP code to see if we have something scheduled near you or adopt your own store.
  2. If you want to help in another way, why not sponsor a striker? The brave act of going out on strike also comes with an economic cost. By making a donation, you can help to ensure that Walmart strikers receive a $50 grocery gift card.
  3. Use the Share for Respect Facebook app to tell your Walmart worker friends about what’s going on.
  4. Join the conversation on how to change Walmart by contributing art and ideas to their Tumblr page.
  5. Connect with workers and other community supporters on the Official Black Friday Walmart Strike Facebook page and like the Making Change at Walmart Facebook page.
  6. On Twitter, use the hashtag #walmartstrikers and follow Making Change at Walmart.
The workers are demanding the following from Walmart:

Improve Workers’ Lives
Pay a minimum of $25,000/year and guarantee quality, affordable health coverage for all Walmart associates and workers in the company’s US distribution chain.
Rebuild Communities Sign on to a national community benefits agreement that ensures as Walmart expands into new markets, it strengthens communities, protects the environment and is responsible for the well-being of its employees in its retail stores and US supply and distribution chain.
Put Its Promises in Writing
Agree to a global labor agreement guaranteeing the fundamental human right of freedom of association for all of its associates and instruct their suppliers to do the same, and recognize and negotiate with OUR Walmart.
Elevate Global Living Standards
Establish a legally binding global responsible contractor policy requiring contractors and subcontractors to provide living wages, worker safety protections, and respect basic human and labor rights, including freedom of association and freedom from racial and gender discrimination.
